Smaller games that are worth a look

Some games I've recently pre-ordered in micro-venture-capitalist optimism: Sunless Sea and Defender's Quest 2

Sunless Sea
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/f ... =235256256
From the creators of Fallen London, which I spent a considerable amount of time exploring primarily for the gaslight Lovecraftian literature feeling it exudes in spades. Clearly not AAA, but precisely the sort of game that deserves to have oodles of money thrown at it, imo.
Key features
  • A huge open map that changes every time you play
  • A deep, compelling world packed with secrets and stories
  • Beautiful, hand drawn 2D art
  • Light and dark. Stray too far from the gas-lamps of civilisation and your crew will grow fearful and eventually lose their sanity. But there is treasure out there in the darkness…
  • Leave a legacy! When you die (and you will) your next captain may choose to inherit a skill, a chart of discovered islands or a beloved officer.
  • Upgrade your steamship with powerful engines, flensing cannons, and pneumatic torpedo guns. Or just buy a bigger, better ship.
  • Hire unique officers like the Haunted Doctor and the Irrepressible Cannoneer. Each has a story to tell, if you can draw it out of them.
  • Choose from a menagerie of ship’s mascots: the Comatose Ferret, the Wretched Mog, the Elegiac Cockatoo, and more!
  • Trade silk and souls, mushroom wine and hallucinogenic honey. Seek out the most profitable hidden trade lanes.
  • Lose your mind
  • Eat your crew
Defender's Quest
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/11 ... s-of-ruin/

On a related note, I've also been meaning to do a review for Defender's Quest, which has similarly great writing (albeit entirely different in tone). Buuut since I never will write a review, suffice to say it's an RPGesque tower defence game with actually humourous writing, and if you want a copy I have one spare from pre-ordering the sequel, so ask and you shall receive.
Things we didn't include:
  • 40+ hours of padding
  • Zillions of random battles
  • Pointless fetch quests
  • Whiny emo kids
  • Deliberate micro-management
  • Cumbersome menus six layers deep
  • $60 price tag
  • Always Online DRM
  • Threats to ban your Origin account if you ask for a refund
  • Aeris dying
What else is there out there that doesn't get coverage but should be played?

Transistor - fucking loving it. Beautiful presentation and just a fun game that puts other games to shame at $20

Edit - oh missed the bit about no publicity - sorry.

First one you posted looks interesting

I don't meant to limit the thread to no publicity, just perhaps the less hyped ones. Transistor certainly intrigues me but haven't investigated yet, despite the 'hum' button. Is Red the same singer as Zia's Theme? LMGTFY: yep, it is... Ashley Barrett. Love the voice

... she coming up to Sydney anytime soon?

Seriously I've been staring at the posting screen for the past ten minuets listening, can't articulate how well that music gels with me.

anyways to contribute, seen a few webms of starsector

looks great if you liked SPAZ
also theres Divinity: Original Sin, co-op isometric rpg that has turn based combat and sort of co-op dialog with npcs, arguments can take place...

Image

but the combat looks pretty cool, splash around a water spell then freeze it, makes that ground slippery, kinda like blackguards, the terrain can be utilized for deeper strategy
its on steam as early access like wasteland 2 but as hobb says, 'fuck early access in the fucking fuck ass'
wait for release

dont have much else to offer, cant play anything else

original sin is pretty awsome aparantly, cant wait to get a copy myself.

infested planet is quite a great game. on steam. have to wipe out alien hives that spew out hordes. almost a reverse tower defense.

the last federation. crazy crazy game.u control the last member of a alien race of space hydras that used to rule over other races and planets like tyrants, untill they shot a moon into ur planet ala planetary aniliation. reminds me of master of orion 2 in almost all the good ways. with the exception that u cant directly controll ur planets u can only affect things thru diplomacy and spying with each race requireing diplomacy to be handled diffrently. some of the warlike races u have to dule the leader for respect or in the case of the insect faction u have to cater to the mood swings of the queen lol. pretty awesome idear with a few gameplay flaws but well worth playing

THEME: Addictive Simplicity!

AURALUX - Simple and raw. The sole-inspiration to the android game that I am developing at the moment. Talked to the creator on reddit.

IMPULSE - Physics based puzzler.

:stanfight:

No plans to head up to Sydney but if you drive down to Northcote Social Club on June 15 there will be cake. And she's better than Little Wise, objectively, no bias here.

How big are the dev teams on these games, I imagine they're all independent? A smaller game like these could get me back into casual gaming.

Remember Sunless Sea by Failbetter Games from my OP?
Bioware + Failbetter games

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/07 ... rror-game/

Fuck yes.

edit: of course, it may be blitheringly average Bioware fare, but I'm still happy to see the Failbetter guys involved
