Alienation

Image

Lead your elite squad in the fight to save Earth from a huge alien invasion in this frantic, top-down, twin-stick shooter. With hordes of alien creatures swarming across the planet, you’ll need to work together with up to three friends to devise tactics and keep each other alive. Unleash devastating weapons upon the alien hordes and earn upgrades to better influence the outcome of the fight in massively destructible environments.

Release Date: April 26, 2016
Developer: Housemarque (creators of Super Stardust, Resogun and Dead Nation)
Platform: PS4
Price: $26.96 Pre-order / $29.95 Regular
Purchase: https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-au/ ... TPREORDPSN

Trailer:
Classes:

They are “mankind’s last hope” – with alien forces closing in on the last strongholds of humanity, the UNX world government has resorted to mechanised infantry in a last attempt to save the planet. Players can choose from three distinct combat exoskeletons, which grant their users superhuman abilities.

Each class – the Tank, the Bio-Specialist and the Saboteur – is built with a specific playstyle in mind and since the game supports drop-in/drop-out gameplay, your four-player squad’s composition might even change during the course of the same mission!

Each class has a unique primary weapon, three unique upgradable active abilities and three upgradable passive abilities. On release day, players will be able to level-up from Level 1 to 30 in either campaign missions, bounties, or procedurally generated scenarios.

Each class has passive abilities that are divided into three “tracks”: Athlete, Warrior and Survivor. Like the active abilities, each track can be upgraded several times. Each time an Ability point is spent, you’ll be asked to make a tough decision between two possible upgrade options. For example, do you want the Health orbs to give you back more HP or extend the duration of the Xenoflowers boosts?

If you’re worried about spec’ing your character in a way that will bite back during missions down the line, fear not! You can always re-spec your UNX soldier to suit your playstyle.

Anyone plan on picking this up? Really enjoyed some of their other games like Resogun and Dead Nation. This looks like it could be a lot of fun with a group. It reminds me of Helldivers which was also very fun and frantic in a group. Bloody tough though. The only thing the game doesn't have, which is a little disappointing seeing as their other games do, is local co-op. People are thinking they will patch it in but it seems like a bit of an oversight not to be there at launch.

One thing that is different with Alienation compared to Dead Nation is that weapons are loot drops from chests and enemies rather than set upgrades. Not sure how much variety there will be but they have said there will be different quality levels (uncommon, rare, legendary, etc). You can also upgrade the weapons with crafting materials called 'cores' which change the way they operate which sounds pretty cool.

Update us if they do add local co-op, it's all I'd want something like this for.

Not really a fan of these types of games - i used to like them when I was younger but the dual stick side of things these days, I dont know, just doesnt work for me. I heard that game that was free on ps+ was good (actually you told me that didnt you?) but other than playing the tutorial i didnt think much of it.

That was Helldivers and your problem lies in only playing the tutorial. A lot of people try these types of games and within an hour or two think they are boring, too slow and not enough explosions. But little do they know that as you progress through the game, things get a lot more chaotic, shit hitting the fan all around you and your team and they are an absolute blast to play in a group. That's how they are meant to be played. Helldivers at the top difficulty levels was bloody hard and actually required a lot of team work and strategy, something which you don't see at the earlier levels. There's a lot of depth to the game underneath that simplistic looking surface.

As for Alienation, well it's absolutely fucking awesome. I played for about 3 hours tonight and had an absolute blast. It's probably a little early but I think I'm having a lot more fun with this than Helldivers and that's saying something. I think the highlight for me is having loot drops rather than straight upgrades to base weapons. It's kinda like Diablo in a way - random loot drops with varying quality with the ability to slot in upgrades and reroll stats if you have the materials. Got to level 8 tonight doing 5 story missions and already my tank is starting to take shape. Got some pretty decent rare weapons from the higher difficulty levels which are really helping out. There's also unique named bosses throughout the levels which you can seek out and take down for more chances at sick loot.

There's apparently challenge missions and bounties to do once you hit level cap with 'invasion' style PvP where you can join other people's games to try and kill them, I guess similar to the Souls games (though I haven't tried it yet). Another cool thing is the leaderboard which is based on your real life country showing how many alien kills and average xp per player. Surprisingly enough Australia is in number 4 right now with over 1.4 million alien kills. Things like that just make a game imo.

Yea it released yesterday DJ and as Bongo said it's $29.95 on the Playstation store. I had a real good time playing it last night, things were already heating up after only a couple of missions, especially if you play on veteran difficulty with other people. I'm not sure how much variety there's going to be in the long term but there's definitely enough content here to get my money's worth and keep me entertained for a while.

People shy away from paying full price for smaller digital only games (and I have too in the past) but it's good to support the little guy every once in a while. These sorts of games are often more fun to play than the blockbuster titles, but sadly they oft get ignored simply because it doesn't have a recognisable developer or name on the cover. The saddest part about the store update yesterday is that more people have played and are talking about a god damn demo than this gem.

The same thing happened with Salt & Sanctuary. Great game but was simply overlooked by the masses.

Disclaimer - I take no responsibility for anyone who buys Alienation and thinks it's shit. You have no taste! ;)

Actually i remember local co-opping a game bloody years ago called Loaded - had a nuts soundtrack, including tracks like Pop will eat itself's Kick to Kill. That was a game similar to this - top down shooter. I guess it's the actual two stick aiming/shooting i'm not a huge fan of - would rather just move with the stick then slam buttons. I guess it's just a case of getting used to it.

Local co-op has now been added along with higher difficulty levels, leagues and quality of life improvements such as more voice binds, changes to the ark ship (end game challenge) and improved drop rates of gear. Game is great and totally worth the asking price :)

It's the same price at the moment. I don't believe there has been a sale on it yet. There's plenty of people playing again due to the latest patch so there's always games going in pretty much every mission. Now would probably be a good as time as any to jump in if you're remotely interested in it.

You're not going to get hundreds/thousands of hours out of the game like you would a multiplayer game, but there's certainly enough content here to get your money's worth. I've played for 50-60 hours so far and I haven't gotten all three classes to max level yet.

The story is throwaway and there's certainly not as much depth or customisation to the classes and loot aspect as something like Diablo 3 but the gameplay is fun and hectic and just extremely smooth and satisfying.

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-au/ ... TIONGAMEEU

Alienation is currently $16.45 (-45%) for PS Plus members or $19.45 (-35%) for non PS Plus members on the AU Playstation Store until August 4th. Local co-op was added in the most recent update along with new difficulty levels, leagues and many other improvements. The local co-op works fine but it does have some limitations such as not being able to play with a mix of local and online players.

Absolute bargain at that price though.
