Overwatch

As someone who played (Quakeworld) Team Fortress on the old Zipworld server, as well as TF Classic and TF2, I must say that I love Overwatch already. I've been putting in some time on the stress test weekend and it's so polished compared to Paladins it isn't funny. Graphically beautiful without being cluttered, easy to play (think HOTS and how it was a great jump-in MOBA rather than complicated), responsive controls and feedback it's taken everything that made TF2 and polished it beautifully. Voice acting is great, sounds feel spot on too and the maps allow decent movement.

I'm really looking forward to release for this. In fact, with the exception of WoW and to a lesser extent Starcraft 2, they have been doing a great job of creating fun games:
Diablo 3 (2016 not release version) is a fun challenge each season, HOTS is just how a MOBA should be for a casual player like me and now this. If they fixed the story telling in SC2 (aka fire Metzen and get a real writer) I'd love the campaigns a lot more. Ironically it's the WoW juggernaut that pales in comparison as it's stagnant.

I'm almost wishing that they'd sorted out the MMO mess that lent the assets to Overwatch as it could have been fun - especially as Guild Wars 2's PvP tanked badly for me with the expansion (actually, they ruined the entire game IMO).

legit drooling in anticipation over this one, looks like it has potential to be a huge hit with a solid competitive base. Its literally made me interested in gaming again after barely touching any games for a couple years

Does this have any form of customization? I got the impression each character has like one weapon and that's it. At least in TF2 you had like 3 weapon slots and a pretty big selection of different things to put in those slots.

watch some of the ability videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4hB88u ... 2ds-coNpyu

each hero has one base weapon I guess, but it can be used in different ways, some have another weapon, all have cooldown based skills/abilities. Tf2 had a bunch of weapon options but most of them were junk that no one used unless they were just looking to muck about, and a few others were crazy OP. Don't get me wrong I loved tf2 and played it competitively for like 2 solid years but most of those unlocks were just terribly balanced one way or another.
TF2 also only had 9 classes and a few of them were super specialised so all those extra weapons and stuff were needed to add some versatility and variance to a game limited by so few class choices, overwatch launches with 21 characters/classes so rather than I guess swapping secondary weapons to counter a new issue you swap class.

Serious question, What does this game offer that tf2 doesn't? Looks basically identical to me, but with more classes and less hat simulator

Abilities instead of weapon variation.

That can only be a good thing imo. Have had my eye on this for a while but unable to have the PC setup in my current arrangement so it would mean I'd have to get it on console. Shooters usually sell well on console and Blizzard have supported Diablo 3 exceptionally well on those platforms too but I wonder how much harder something like this would be with a controller.

Its quite twitch and fast, I'd wager that it would be a very different experience on console to PC. Being a blizzard and hyped game I would say it won't have any issues with numbers on any platform.

its been while since ive played TF2, but id say:

More competitive 6v6 match format.
quick games games matched with MMR...or atleast i think it tries
Competitive ranking mode.
The abilities and ultimates.
it looks way better.

But yeah, im loving it sofar, i played alot this weekend on my account, but im almost rank 100 on a friends account, im trying not to play too much of the beta. at the moment the competitive mode is alittle annoying in Australia, with the lack of players, at the lower ranks it would match me against australians but getting higher in ranks it only matches me on American servers.

I have about 100 hours playtime if anybody has any questions.

Does it actually have a $70 pricetag? Is it good enough to justify the price?

This game just looks slow and boring and low skill to me. Watched that montage of tracer zipping around above and it still just looks boring fighting slow enemies at close range with basically hitscan weapons. Looked at some pharah because quake rocket / tribes spinfuzor is my heart but the problem is the same with the tracer thing, sure your gameplay is slightly faster and more interesting but it is entirely diminished by most enemies being extremely slow. Quake would not be fun if only you had the ability to strafe jump. Tribes would not be fun if you were the only one who could ski.

I saw a McCree video and the whole video was this guy stunning people with some instant grenade and then instakilling them with a revolver burst fire. What the fuck kind of world am I living in where "ganking" is not only a thing that exists in an FPS like this but apparently also a character's intended primary playstyle? How can anyone approve of this?

Welp, time to go back to angrily rewartching old quake frag videos and generally living in the past.

I think you'll find that quite a few of the classes have mobility skills that speed the pace of the game up a lot. There are a few sluggish classes but they are defs in the minority.
Also in the tracer montage, at least one of the ones I posted, it was to showcase the character and it seemed like they were going out of their way to not kill the tracer for the purpose of making it look cool. Which it did. But it's not as you describe where tracer has this amazing mobility no one else can posses.

Do you play quake live Tobias?

I'm kinda keen on playing this game. It looks like you could have an ok time casual pugging like tf2. Would have to buy a new pc for it though :(

I can't say I agree with you Tobias. The variety of character difficulty means that you can enjoy whatever pace you want. Coming from Smite, it's a variation on it and TF2 and for me that means fun. The faster characters are more difficult but for those of us whose reactions have slowed down, there are characters that can be played well as well.

Then again, my idea of relaxation is World of Warships nowadays :D

Used to a lot between like 2010 and 2013, wasn't super happy about some of the directions they took with it but I checked out the new steam client thing and it's really solid aside from the pricetag killing a lot of the casual interest the game got when it was free and browser-based.

I'm still pretty lukewarm on overwatch, looking into it more and hearing from a lot of people about how high end play is really driven by meta and counterpicking more then individual skill.

:D

Re counter-picking, you change class in spawn to adjust just like TF2. If anything it keeps the game fluid. Besides, fuck ranked, I want to have fun

Ironically Tobias it scratched my Quake/UT itch nicely. The only complaint is the maps (in closed beta) feel a bit tight - but I could argue that about any number of FPS
