Battlefleet Gothic: Armada

Picked this up the other day - allowing early access into the multiplayer beta. Comes with a prologue of about 3 missions (and some very cool, very 40k fluffy cutscenes), multiplayer 1v1 and skirmish vs ai 1v1. The campaign is Imperial only but the skirmish and multi allows you to play both Imperial and Chaos. In the full game which releases next week, you can also play as Orks and Eldar. One of the campaign missions is against Orks, protecting 3 transports from Freebooterz and lol their ships dont simply look awesome, they totally go for the suicidal ram as they make fearless attempts to steal all ya teef.

Overall the game is fucking mad - one of the best 40k games in recent years. The ship models look brilliant, and it's so nice to play a strategy game where unlike RTS units that typically go down in a few shots, you are maneuvering these super massive cruisers against each other, lining up for broadsides, striking with skillshot torpedoes, sending barrages of boarding pods, launching fighters/bombers/assault boats.

Very cool ship customisation too, rich with additional 40k fluff. Can skill up invidual crew from navigators to the on board commisar, captain, master gunner, mechanicum techpriest yadda yadda. Can also customise the skills and abilites from standard extra layers of void shields yadda yadda to active skills like deployable plasma bombs, augers and even micro warps to either evade enemy ships or jump your super heavy ships into other ships paths.

Beta needs a bit of polish but seriously cant wait to get my teeth stuck into the campaign, if it's like the prologue and full of cutscenes etc, hnnngh.

Wishlisted this the second it came out and watched Angry Joes dev preview vid the other week with an unstoppable boner. Saw the pre-order was multiplayer only and beta, so dismissed it. Regret.

Is the Space Marine pre-order bonus stuff in the beta? I remember reading somewhere its 'just a couple' of extra ships for the Imperial Navy, they otherwise play the same except with a battle barge or something minor.

Fuckit, I'll preorder and find out. Emperor forgive me for implying there's ever anything minor about Space Marines.

Nah there's no space marine ships but they come out a few weeks after release. Ahh I wondered how they would be implemented, added to the imperial lineup makes sense. Bring on the battle barges and grand cruisers!

As far as extra races, the devs have said they want to get tau, necrons and nids into it down the track.

The cutscenes in this are unreal. If they can seriously get Tau et al into this then holy shit we have a winner.

Beyond crazy the amount of lore fluff is in this. Obvious that the devs love 40k as much as anyone.
These fucking orks, man.

Few tips on graphics - there's a bug with anti aliasing - drop it down to low and it removes the blur on ships as you pan out. Also dont use the preset graphics thing to epic as it doesnt seem to set the texture resolution one - manually up that to epic and the ships look super sexy at no matter what zoom level. I'm hoping they add the option to remove the grid with the full game. Also press F10 to disable the UI for a cinematic view. Really cant wait to get into the campaign next week, hope there's lots of cutscene fluff throughout.

I'm super keen for this, always wanted to play the tabletop game but never had enough dedication.

Been gnawing at the bit for a giant space battles game in glorious 3D for years.

Wouldn't be an unreal engine game if the graphics options are all sorts of fucked up. I'm on a 760 and I cannot for the life of me get vsync to stay on. AA on anything but high turns my ships into puddles of mud. Game otherwise runs fine tho, solid 60-90fps with dips down to 40 if I zoom in while in a cloud or explosions.

Really enjoying the different map objectives, tho some of them are pretty easily cheesed with certain factions. Did that one where you have to defend the space station from chaos. Took just a single cruiser and 4 escorts to see how they all work, fully expecting to lose horribly. Ended up with the space station a bees dick away from being destroyed, my cruiser ramming the last enemy cruiser, pushing it out of range of the station, then exploding. Enemy cruiser is left with a pip of hull life left so I start suicide ramming my escorts into it while blindly firing off torpedos. 3 escorts slamming into this cruiser and a single, lucky torpedo that somehow managed to get thru all the wreckage of my ships and down she goes, just outside of lance range to the station.
Fuck.
Yes.

This game is amazing.

Ive been playing multiplayer and fuck it's good fun. It's such surprisingly good strategy, and so rich in 40k detail.

One thing that cracks me up is how your crew can mutiny when the ships taking a pounding - where you're presented with an option to then execute them and have another captain take over. You then lose that ship for the next round as it's getting a new crew.

The way you lose ships between rounds when they;'ve been too heavily damaged or destroyed is great - their repairs sped up by spending the XP currency.

Orks have been added in todays patch, along with a total Chaos rework. They've also added vsync with this one

Check out the Ork battleship in this vid, so good.

Looks great from the trailers, I'll have to check it out. BFG was one of my favorite tabletop spinoffs of Warhammer 40K

I took it for a spin a few weeks ago - I like it but the UI and hotkeys feel clunky compared to Homeworld. I'll look at it again now that vsync is in and try and mess with the hotkeys.

I rate it above Bloodbowl 2 by a long shot as a GW game :D

If you're like pretty much everybody else- you need to (ab)use the tactical cogitator more. Still gotta learn the keys, but that + time slowdown = much less frustration.

Shame the release date was pushed back to mid april. I have a feeling it'll be overshadowed by a certain big name release.

It was a good idea to push it back though - there's some large balance issues that need addressing. That amount of time should see a lot of improvement. I imagine they'll add Eldar to the beta before then too.

Re hotkeys, the biggest problem i had initially was setting WASD for the camera. You couldnt rebind etc. If you set them as that then click default layout or whatever it is, it fixes it incidentally. Otherwise the camera is fucking whack.

There's going to be more news on Eldar either today or tomorrow, I suspect they'll be added in. Will be really interesting to see how they play given all their weaponary is prow based. That's going to mean some hardcore micromanagement.

Yeah I tend to steer clear of prow based ships now just because of the high time cost for mostly missed or poorly timed shots. But I do love me them torpedoes, something just gives me an unnatural stroke of luck because I do the most bullshit moves with them that pretty much win games for me.

Hopefully they take a good long look at Orks for some balance. :dev: Cool as orks are, they are a bit fuckoffop at times.

Was tired as hell last night and thought I'd have a couple of games. 5levels later I'm wide awake on my 3rd coffee screaming at orks wrecking my brand new cruisers. Release cant come soon enough.

Did you see the angry joe preview of the game? They show some of the campaign - the galaxy maps etc - looks so good. Super big galaxy, has the other races in it which when they take a planet, have a percent chance of hitting the next target along etc, meaning you have to contain them.

I'm keen to see what the planetary assault mode will be like too. Hopefully good
