I have been developing with Unity for a few years now and today I woke up with some amazing news ^^^

I was getting professional enough to the point that I was considering the features of pro and about to throw down $2000 NZD for it. Woke up this morning to not only Unity 5 being released, but also the free personal version contains many of the once locked features of pro. I felt like a little kid unwrapping a birthday present when I installed it and ran it for the first time this morning.

I've always wanted to make an isometric action rpg game, but everytime I try and get started I just get completely overwhelmed.

this guy made gunpoint using game maker aka babbys first IDE(looks like to me)

you can also just mod games already out, that takes care of art assets etc for some experience, see if it's for you

Yeah I made a bunch of maps for Shadowrun Returns and did some of the initial scripting / dialogue. I had no idea gunpoint was made with a game maker package software, though.

With the proviso that the game must be sold on steam, where it just so happens Valve takes a 30% cut of sales.

I can say with almost 100% certainty that any dev that picks an engine for the reasons listed in this thread then decides to not put it on steam needs to have their head checked

GameMaker is definaly the engine to start off in. When I was a teen I purchased a C++ reference book and it didn't last long as all the terminology was complex for me and the first few chapters were taunting, especially when it didn't really show you how to setup any IDE (it was purely reference, I should have checked). For a long time I thought programming was way too hard for me, but I needed something that could be used for the most basic concepts to intermediate. Which is why gamemaker is so good since you can start off with a simple drag and drop interface, but when you start to really want to do proper interactions, the GML language wasn't too scary compared to what I know now, it was more .... forgiving, when it comes to syntax and errors. I would recommend to stick to 2d in game maker however.

After about 1-2 years of making about 10 different failed prototypes (failed means GOOD. The quicker that you make a working prototype, the sooner you want to start again with more experience and making each irritation/attempt better), I eventually hit what I considered to be a breaking point, where I was trying to code a complex UI with Game Maker, and it was the first time my expectations were well above game makers ability.

I took my anger out on Gamemakers IRC channel which is when someone recommended me something called Unity, which I had never heard of. This is what happened a day or two after I installed it.

And it's been about half a year now using Unity and been a huge fan of it ever since. Now my workflow has improved, I make much more complex games.

I've never really worked in a team or published anything noteworthy. I am looking to change that, but need more time to dedicate to it. I'm working on my 3d modeling skills at the mo and just recently discovered the awesomeness of three.js

I want to start up some freelance work on the side where I do 3D work for clients and just tonight created this browser viewer with three.js.
Captain Falcon helmet FTW. http://www.keep-interactive.com/

I seriously am having a 3d modeling/programmers crush for it right now, some of the demos are INSANE: http://threejs.org/
