Persistance is out. You can go into space, do missions for both pve and pvp, earn alpha funbux, use funbux to repair you ship and buy hats. It's a functional videogame. New golden age is here. GTA Online in space.

I actually left my pc on to update on Saturday night (my first update since around January) as they released a new version of the alpha. I was mucking around yesterday morning flying around port olisar when my adsl went out, didn't come back on till this morning. But man, i could feel the difference compared to last time i tried it, there seems to be a lot more to do in the alpha now. This dudes reddit post sums up my feelings:
It's starting to come out of the cracks, what star citizen wants to be. I can feel it, the gameplay is adding more and more features, and it's honestly feeling like what I wanted when I played eve. 'Man I wish I could actually walk around my station and my ship.' Never in any video game could I imagine FLYING a ship as massive as the Starfarer outside some scripted event. Most devs in the past have stated that making things like this are impossible, that it can't be done, well cig have proved to me that it CAN be done and that it HAS been done. Once the performance is up to par, and more mechanics are added, this game will really be a dream come true.

Edited: Changed PTU to alpha

Had my first go of star citizen today, it's quite cool (although a current netcoding issue has everyone in the persistent universe getting like 20FPS max... not an issue with the other parts of the game though).

Def has me interested to see more.

never backed so i give zero shits about this game but

-space is too accurate(its dark as fuck. Eve online fixed this with nebulas for contrast)
-fable 3 had walking menus as well, its shit
-cod in space, why.svg
-fetch quests yay
-needs more bloom
-sausage fest

More work is to be done i know, but thus far i dont think anybody will even pirate it

Free flight this weekend - anyone can get in and give it a go...

https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/co ... ers_guide/

there's a FAQ there on instructions on the basic controls you'll need to know and what to do when you get in the game. I've been having some fun with it the last week or so.
FPS in the persistent universe is pretty crappy at the moment but should be fine elsewhere (eg. arena commander modes)

Live demo from gamescon, this wasn't pre-recorded... I'd play the hell out of this.

Shows off multi crew ships, planet landing, missions...

The seamlessness of it all is just amazing imo

EDIT.. also, these guys are just printing money... up to $119mill raised now

I just watched the Gamescon presentation and WOW WOW WOW!

Im still shit at the game and need to get good at dog fighting. But its figuring out all the keys and whether i hsould be mouse + KB or joystick + mouse r whatever. What do you guys use? The in game key chart screen is really hard to read and most buttons seem to have 2 modifiers. Anyhow, just some shit i have to work out for myself.

Also i see there is a key mapped for contacts now. Anyone playing out of Port Ollisar regularly?

Looking forward to the single player. Freelancer single player was excellent but never really had the free time for MP.

Damn impressive architecture in the city port thing, incredible level of detail and realism

Runs like crap but thats ok....flight seems kinda basic at the moment but I have no idea what Im doing

Im pretty impressed to be honest, I had pretty low hopes for this game and just gave money cause I loved the idea but it seems like it will be worth keeping an eye on for sure

I get great FPS in flight commander, but apparently there's some issues with the engine in the persistent universe which is dragging everyone's frame rates down which is being worked on naturally...

Did you cheer along with the rest when momentous things such as door hatches were opened?

heh, i remember thinking "those guys (cheering for the hatch) must be freelancer owners"

i also watched the whole thing over a few sessions (not something i ever do either) and am thoroughly impressed.
- space walk to the derelict ship
- stuff floating around inside
- parking the dragonfly (space bike) in the back of the freelancer
- heat shields as they enter the atmosphere
- the way the wind sound slowly rises/fades
- the way the terrain looks from high altitude and doesn't change as you get closer
- the buggy from "moon patrol"

while the shootout in the derelict ship (and on the surface) looked very bland, that the job requires you to get out of the ship and scavenge around like thieving raccoons is giving me a semi. i know some have zero interest outside of piloting but that single mechanic can open up the scope/variety so much. anything to break up the inevitable monotony of tasks is going to be greatly appreciated. i probably assumed it was going to be "fly here, kill target, fly home" rinse and repeat with the ship boarding part of the SP campaign. looking forward to it.
