I really enjoyed Bones Brigade: An Autobiography recently, nostalgia ++ and such an awesome bunch of guys. For contrast also watch Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator.

Also currently in my doco folder -
Bob Marley
Lemmy
American: The Bill Hicks Story
H. R. Giger Revealed
Pixies: Loud, Quiet, Loud
Planet B-Boy

Other than the occasional surprise like Catfish or The King of Kong I tend to seek out nature and science docos or topics/people I already have an interest in.

Man anything from VICE is amazing documentary watching I've found. Pretty sure VICE did a bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan special too (EDIT: just noticed the one DJ linked is VICE even though it's on The Age site)

So many good docos out there...I wouldn't know where to begin. Really depends on what floats your boat?

In terms of stuff I've been watching recently - anything by British documentarian Adam Curtis comes highly recommended, but in particular:

- The Mayfair Set (goes into the "buccaneer capitalists" of the 80's who were responsible for all sorts of heinous predatory financial practices)

- The Century of Self (from wiki: How Freud's theories concerning the unconscious led to Edward Bernays' development of public relations, the use of desire over need and self-actualisation as a means of achieving economic growth and the political control of population)

- All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace (essential viewing for the computer lovers amongst us. Goes into Randian theory and how a few influential Randian theorists in Silicon Valley are responsible for so much of how we approach the world today than we even realise)

Also if cool technology and science stuff floats your boat, hunt out the recent series Visions Of The Future, presented by Michio Kaku. This series stands apart from most other "future docos" I've seen, in that it paints an overwhelmingly positive picture about our future and evolution (albeit with the requisite caveats/warnings) and makes you somewhat hopeful about what will come and our ability to overcome what are currently seen as almost insurmountable obstacles. Really, really inspiring stuff.

Enjoyed this.

Actually ive researched a bit into kidnapping, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome previously as i'd heard of ppl being kidnapped and then becoming accomplices and so on - which mystified me.

It is interesting - that supposedly all of us have this instinct/trait within us (to bond to a captor) - as it's supposedly a survival mechanism thats been bred into over a long period of time by natural selection.

Watched on your recommendation. I liked the whole series a lot. I watched on youtube and when one finished the next started, I didn't even mean for that, :o

All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace, has a 8.3 rating on IMDB, will watch that next.

Called the Stockholm Syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome. One of the first things they school you on at the International Deployment Group, takes about 30 minutes of explanation to 'defeat' the syndrome (knowing of it and how it works is sufficient to combat against it....although some freaks will still associate with their captors no matter what :dev: )

the real question though is how do you instill it into someone once you capture them. I just want to know for, you know, research purposes.

Re: Documentary Thread

There have been threads on here before about Devil's Breath...that VICE piece is good but the best stuff is in articles when you read into it. Also search by its Columbian name, Burundanga.

Been used by CIA etc for years as a "truth serum" and is also a common form of motion sickness tablet.

World's Scariest Drug - Scopolamine
High school friend of mine was scammed for almost a week straight only a couple months ago, he's not a dumb guy, just a bit naive and friendly, he fucked up pretty much straight away when he accepted a ciggie from a local a few moments after arriving, the guy then posed as his tour guide and was showing him around but along the way asking for more and more wads of cash for the days activities.
