Just a general interest of mine at the moment is finding out who or what got you started on the whole tribes genre. Figure it would also be useful for any future marketing purposes for the vengeance guys too ;)

Basically my story.. cept the friend of mine was a nutball Quake1 player. He was considered (and I guess still is) one of the best in Australia.

He showed me T1 saying it'd be 'the next big thing after quake'.

5 Years later im still part of it and he never played the game more then once or twice.

I chose other.

My gf''s mother was manager of Wireplay at the time. She took me in for a look late one night and they where all playing tribes, My first memory was of how fucking cool it was to be able to oob o snipe and just the visual thing of "zooming" and the zap sound of the t1 laser.

It was the reason i bought my first PC and got on the net.

came home cashed up from my first 6 months uni work experience, saw it in a comp shop and remembered seeing it in PCPP. bought it. proceeded to spend hundreds of dollars maintaining my POS rural internet connection to feed the habbit.

circa 1999 - goose_ was playing T1 at one of the early Hub LANs in Wellington. A whole bunch of o-bots (a Quake2 clan at the time) were huddled around his PC thinking how insanely cool it was. A week or so later we were a T1 clan :D

I was playing outwars back in the day and everyone keped saying "off to play tribes", looked it up and seemed interesting so I tryed to find a copy here, apparently it hadn't been released yet so I think I just hounded the stores for a couple of weeks untill they got it in.

Got hooked on it right away even if it took me ages to get up to the switch on the training mission, and I was running it at 10 FPS at the lowest possible settings :)

I used to work at a netcafe. One of the guys I worked with, Konishki ( dunno if anyone will remember him? He also got [email protected], Rumble, and Omino into Tribes ), used to play it loads on our machines after he finished work.

I was a bit hesitant about playing it at first; I'm not a hardcore gamer or anything, and Tribes just looked like a run of the mill FPS. But then he showed me how to use the Command Console, and eplained about how all these guys on his side worked as a team... and I got freaken' hooked! I thought it was brilliant!!

I never did get that switch in the training mission Stan. It took me a very long time to learn how to ski. I recall [email protected] trying to teach me once ( we worked at the same place ), he was like "Just go with it, Booster... use the terrain, let it shape your ski run and give you speed, just follow the terrain". I was like "Ok, Chief!"... took off at the top of this bowl bit on Stonehenge, all intense concentration, determined I'd get to nme base and make a leetz0r flag grab... ended up "skiing" in a complete circle and wound up in exactly the same place I started. I was like "WTF!!??" , [email protected] was laughing his ass off. :)

Like others here, the reason I got a PC and an internet connection was just to play Tribes.
