those stickers on gfx cards

last weekend my computer went bzzzt and wouldn't boot while my 13 month old gfx card was plugged in. i was happy to see it had a 3 year manufacturer warranty so I dropped it off.

umart "oh, I see you removed the serial number sticker"
hobb "huh? I don't recall removing any sticker"
umart "well it's gone, just saying that in the past they have denied warranties because the sticker has been removed"
hobb "i have never heard of such a thing, why are serial numbers done with stickers? that sounds retarded"

i think I did remove it after I saw it was about to fall off coz adhesives and prolonged heat tend to do that. i should hear in the next two weeks whether they'll honour the warranty.

If you have to get a new card, don't cheap out and buy one of pet's old ones.

or dont be heff :yellow_laugh:

So your out for a couple of weeks hey hobbs? We've been crushing everyone in H1Z1. Got the best explosive arrow on a car kill you'll ever not see the other night.

I can't imagine they would be allowed to deny your claim in grounds of the sticker being removed. Seems like something the ACCC would be against.

i thought it was very charitable of heff to provide a forever home for that retired crypto currency miner ;)

yeah if it were any other part I'd just go pick one up but it's a bad time of year to shell out $500 for a decent gpu on the offchance. getting massive BR withdrawals dammit :dev:

I had this exact same experience around 3-4 years ago. Bought a new card, a month later started having issues and brought it in. Whilst trying to self-fix I ripped the serial code off as it was hanging loosely (didn't know what it was). Brought it in to get a replacement only to be informed that it wasn't covered by warranty.

I spent the next few hours at home trawling through the trash to find the other half of my serial code. Luckily found it and put the two pieces together and got an exchange on my faulty card.

i've sent gigabyte an email.

any ombudsman-type person will ask "did you try to solve this yourself first" so I'll get that going.
