Hardware Acceleration - router-CPUs contribute im guessing
Hardware acceleration only means they have a separate dedicated processor for encryption/decryption. If you use your computer as the VPN endpoint, this won't be required as your computer has more than enough grunt to handle the overhead of encryption.

If you are terminating your VPN on your router which is built with minimal spec's, then a separate processor for encryption/decryption is necessary. An example is the Cisco AIM VPN/SSL module for their Cisco 2800 series.

I would never recommend terminating VPN at your router, no consumer-grade hardware will ever meet the performance requirements.

The cheapest you could probably do is find a Cisco 1841 off Ebay. (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CISCO1841-AD ... 4ae89c9092)

They support ADSL2+ if you get the correct WIC card and have a seperate module called SSL-VPN-AIM which will provide a hardware processor strong enough for VPN encryption.

If you don't know how to configure a Cisco router via command line, you can ask someone on whirlpool who could mock one up for you.

The other option if command line scares you, is to go for a Checkpoint UTM VPN-1. Won't have the performance of a dedicated VPN AIM, but will be good enough for home use. If you are on NBN however, and trying to send 100mbps through your VPN it will crumble.

You can get some REALLY REALLY cheap second-hand enterprise level gear on Ebay. We sell 50k switches for like 500 bucks on Ebay simply due to there being no 2nd hand market for enterprise gear. No one will install it due to no warranties / maintenance agreements and its all snatched up for 0.01% of the price by IT people looking to self-study at home on real gear.

Thanks for the tips mf - Shame some others are mad. hehehe
I have enlightened myself of what "hardware acceleration" actually is for VPNs.
EDIT: (Supposedly) you can connect some sort accelerator to your router or have it onboard like you said - in an enterprise router (expensive).

CLI Cisco Routers:
In fact i was trained by a Super Sensei - Master of CLI Cisco Mantis Art.
