Not a great deal but...

http://www.google.com/patents/US20110105231

i think they want some ubiquitous hardware in the living room that can be developed for and 1 click ported to pc

remains to be seen if they've managed to sweet talk nvidia, unlikely but stranger things

I wish i had more insights, i hate walled gardens but in the livingroom you dont get hardware vendor support without them, i also dont want this offering from valve to crash and burn... :wtf:

A Steambox bundled with dota2 and half life 3 / portal 3 + OCULUS RIFT.

In combination with nvidia streaming IP has potential to break microsofts hold over gamers disillusioned with windows 8 and publishers fearful of a windows lock out.

This is big news.

My understanding of it is that it's basically like an ouya + nvidia shield, designed to be run on a shitty laptop or something plugged into your TV.

I don't understand why anyone would want this.

As long as it provides the ability to stream games + music and movies there will be plenty of people checking it out. After reading it I think I will have to put my old dual core laptop to use steaming games like tomb raider and shit to my lounge room.

Its a long term vision, right now its mainly designed around streaming from your windows pc to your tv as 99% of games are windows/directx. Now both next gen consoles are using x86 (almost straight portable) while xbone is directx, the ps4 is opengl.. an easy route for steamos which uses opengl. Im sure valve can do things like offer to take a much smaller percentage of the cut in sales for an opengl version of game released on steam etc to speed up the transition.
So in 5+ years etc and a critical mass of opengl games are being released to run natively on steamos ..much easier to drop windows then if your purely a gamer.

Its not like microsoft will put up much of a fight as they are so apathetic towards windows gamers (gfwl etc) and would gladly burn 100 pc gamers to gain 1 xbox gamer.

second 'bulletin' is released and... its fucking nothing
What are the specs of the Valve prototype?
We'll tell you more about it soon. Remember, there will ultimately be several boxes to choose from, with an array of specifications, price, and performance.
Wheres a picture of it? How big is it?
We promise we'll tell you more about it soon.
>announcement of an announcement

fuck you valve

I don't understand the market they're looking for... dumb console plebs whom love the idea of plug and play 1 size fits all hardware or the pc mustard race who jew gold individual parts from chink online shops to painstakingly assemble themselves.

The latter are never going to buy branded pcs and valve is not trying to magic bullet the former... so wtf...

* Dual high resolution trackpads(also clickable)

* 'Dual linear resonant actuators' under them for 'super-precise haptic feedback'

* Touchscreen in center is also a button

* 16 buttons in total, over half dont require lifting thumbs to hit

* Hacked in 'legacy' keyboard and mouse emulator drivers for older games

* Still gonna be shit as fuck compared to mouse and keyboard and since swiping my phone causes pain, not gonna help me

why do u even want the console plebbers gaben

Re: SteamOS

I thought it was Linux modded for built in steam support - as in, still useable as a pc

Last I heard it was just based on ubuntu so it should still have aptitude and software center?

The one feature that I'll keep on eye on is streaming games to my htpc.

That's roughly in line with what their initial announcements said - I really doubt it's a single purpose OS, that would be an odd move

Will be dual-booting ASAP to check out performance, which Valve have talked up considerably. Think Valve games (CS) will work with it straight away?
